Hobokenites have only a few more weeks to wait for the new Whole Foods Daily Market to open. The location at 101 Washington Street was formerly home to a Walgreens. Plans for the Daily Market were finalized in spring 2025, and residents have been eagerly monitoring the progress of the space. The first hint of the incoming Whole Foods Daily Market came in late 2024 when The Hoboken Girl reported on application materials submitted to Hoboken’s Planning Board concerning the space at 101 Washington Street. The space was formerly home to a Walgreens, which closed in November 2023. At a March 2025 Hoboken City Council meeting, plans for the Daily Market were approved unanimously.

The Daily Market format is a smaller store for urban neighborhoods that offers the same fresh foods and brands as traditional Whole Foods Markets. The Daily Markets will feature produce, meat, seafood, snacks, prepared foods, supplements, and some specialty items, plus many Whole Foods store brands such as 365. The market will also offer a selection of locally produced goods.

Per a statement from Whole Foods, shoppers can expect to find fresh, seasonal produce, meat and seafood; prepared foods options, including sandwiches, pre-packed meals and breads; and supplements, and 365 by Whole Foods Market brand products.

There will also be more than 350 local products from 250 Northeast-based suppliers, including New Jersey-based favorites like pasta sauce from Hoboken Farms and quinoa crisps from Undercover Snacks.

Studies of other Daily Market locations show that some of the most popular items in the store are berries, grapes, avocados, rotisserie chickens, and prepared foods.

The opening day celebration on December 18th, 2025, will include samples from local suppliers, and the first 300 customers in line will also receive a limited-edition tote bag. In addition to supporting other regional efforts, Whole Foods Market will also donate to area organizations in New Jersey, including The Hoboken Shelter and Hoboken Community Center.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken High School is celebrating one of the strongest football seasons in its history, after the Redwings closed out the year with a 9–1 record and an undefeated regular season. Under the direction of Head Coach Joseph Borkowski, the team delivered a dominant performance on both sides of the ball, reigniting pride in a program that has long been a cornerstone of Hoboken athletics.

Across ten games, the Redwings posted 286 total points, an average of 28.6 per game, while holding opponents to just 114 points, or 11.4 per game. Their strong balance of offense, defense, and leadership propelled them to the top of their league and positioned several athletes as standout performers.

“This group of young athletes committed themselves fully to our mission from day one,” Borkowski said. “They worked with purpose, they trusted each other, and they represented Hoboken with toughness and class every time they stepped on the field. What they achieved this season wasn’t an accident, it was earned through discipline, accountability, and unity.”

Quarterback Isaiah Blanks led the offensive effort, completing 95 of 165 passes for 1,628 yards and 19 touchdowns, while adding 302 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. Running back Devin McMillan rushed for 1,184 yards and 13 touchdowns on 157 carries and added three receiving touchdowns. Wide receiver Jae’on Walker recorded 896 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, emerging as a key playmaker.

Defensively, Hoboken posted two shutouts and consistently set the tone with physical, disciplined play. McMillan led the team with 75 tackles, followed by Nick Benway with 54 and Angelis Reyes with 51. Blanks contributed 4.5 sacks, while Anthony Lopez added three. In the secondary, Samond Walker led with five interceptions.

Principal Robin Piccapietra said the team’s success resonated throughout the school.

"This football team did far more than win games—they brought our school together,” she said. “Their work ethic, sportsmanship, and leadership inspired students throughout the building and restored a sense of pride that is felt in every hallway.”

Several Redwings earned league honors, including First Team selections Isaiah Blanks, Devin McMillan, Jae’on Walker, Luke Schreiber, Anthony Lopez, Nick Benway, and Samond Walker. Second Team honorees included Brandon Caraballo and Angelis Reyes, with Josh Henriquez receiving Honorable Mention and Omar Naser recognized with the All-Academic Award.

Athletic Director Jack Baker said the season marks a turning point for the program.

“What this team accomplished goes far beyond the record. They played with heart, discipline, and a true love for the game,” he said. “This season reminded our entire community of what Hoboken Football stands for and why its return is so meaningful.”

With their success this year, Hoboken’s senior class leaves behind a renewed sense of momentum for future players. According to the district, the foundation has been rebuilt and expectations are higher than ever as the program looks ahead.

New Jersey commuters have had a whirlwind week of news headlines coming from NJ Transit and the New York / New Jersey Port Authority. The most recent of the headlines was an announcement on Friday, November 14th, that the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line will undergo a 10-mile expansion with seven new stops. The Hudson-Bergen line currently only extends as far as North Bergen. The new plan, titled “The Northern Branch Project”, from NJ Transit will bring the Light Rail tracks 10 miles further north to an anticipated terminal at Englewood Hospital. There will be seven stops added across five municipalities, including North Bergen, Ridgefield, Palisades Park, Leonia, and Englewood.

The project is still in the early stages of planning, and riders will likely have to wait a year or two before construction begins. The environmental impact statement considers potential impacts of the project on surrounding areas, including noise, wildlife, air quality, infrastructure, traffic patterns, and more.

Per press release, NJ Transit announced that it issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to hire a contractor to prepare a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS). As the proposal is currently written, the electric railway would be located along West Side Avenue in North Bergen and the existing railroad right-of-way owned by CSX Transportation between 91st Street in North Bergen and the northern Border of Englewood.

Northern Branch Corridor Project Proposal via NJ Transit

A previous version of the plan, titled “The Northern Branch Corridor Project” was published for public commentary in 2011. The original plan extended service to Tenafly, which was opposed by residents and community leaders. The Federal Transit Administration rescinded its Notice of Intent to review that Environmental Impact Statement in 2023 since environmental conditions have changed since its writing in 2007.

“NJ TRANSIT remains committed to extending the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail into Bergen County,” said NJ TRANSIT President and CEO Kris Kolluri. “This RFP is a concrete demonstration of that commitment. Providing mass transit options to all regions of New Jersey takes cars off the road, cleans the air we breathe, and drives economic activity, sustainable housing, and a multitude of other benefits.”

“As one of the most densely populated counties in the state, Bergen County welcomes additional mass transit options,” Bergen County Executive James Tedesco added, “The Northern Branch project will fulfill that need and enhance the lives of all who call Bergen County home. I thank NJ TRANSIT for continuing this vital project.”

As part of the EIS process, there will be an opportunity for public comment once the draft is complete for a minimum period of 45 days.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Residents around North Jersey briefly glimpsed the Northern Lights Tuesday night when the colors became visible amid the clouds. In Bergen County, a resident said online that he got a glimpse of the "faint red color."

And a Glen Rock native who's a science teacher took photos showing the faint reds and greens. See her photo below.

."I put my phone on long exposure and got very lucky that the clouds broke to grab a few or as my son said, about 1,000 shots !" said Hope Foley. "I am a science teacher, and can't wait to show my students!"

The lights, caused by a powerful G4-rated geomagnetic storm, are the strongest since October of last year, when the display was also glimpsed far South. If the storms continue again Wednesday evening, residents of 24 states may see the colors again, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The lights also appeared briefly Tuesday night in Hudson County after 10 p.m., when the Kp rose above 8 in the area. This was the sky above Hoboken:

But When?

The Aurora app shows when viewing the display is most likely. The chances of seeing the lights are best with a Kp index of at least 5, the Washington Post wrote in a story about aurora borealis tourism.

For Wednesday night, the Kp was forecast to reach 8.33 around 10 p.m. in North Jersey, the Aurora app said. Thursday night might see another Kp of 8, the app said.

The National Weather Service offers predictions for the next two days, showing a map of where the lights may be seen.

The lights can be glimpsed any time after dusk, but are usually seen later at night. Cloudy skies may obscure the view, but the forecast is for some clearing on Sunday and clear skies on Monday.

How To Snap A Photo

To snap a photo of the lights, face north and use a slow shutter speed if you can. Sometimes the display can't be seen with the naked eye, but can be seen if you turn up the exposure on the photo.

Why All Of A Sudden?

The display of lights, also called aurora borealis, appeared to the naked eye in Canada and northern parts of the U.S. last year because the sun was at the peak of an 11-year cycle, scientists said. During this "solar maximum," heightened geomagnetic storming increases the chances of seeing the aurora south of its usual Arctic range.

This year could also offer colors as Solar Cycle 25 reaches its peak, scientists say.

With more people on social media now than during the last solar maximum — which was back in 2013 — and more reading news sites and using apps such as Aurora, the word has been spreading rapidly about the brilliant displays, and photographers now post their images all across social media.

Those who wait all their lives to see the lights can head a few hours north if they want to take their best shots.

The chances of seeing lights generally increase around the fall equinox, when the sun produces a surplus of geomagnetic storms, almost twice the annual average.

Some New Jerseyans have reported seeing the northern lights shining over the Garden State last night, November 11th, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that they may be visible again tonight. The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, are typically only visible in proximity to the North Pole. You might not need to travel all the way to Norway to get a good look at the northern lights, at least not this week. reporting stated that Tuesday night’s northern lights sightings as far south as Florida resulted from a geomagnetic storm. The storm conditions are expected to continue into tonight.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts geomagnetic storm activity and shared the following statement via X:

The NOAA breaks down the science of the aurora borealis phenomenon as electrons colliding with Earth’s upper atmosphere, forming an oval over the magnetic North Pole. When there are geomagnetic or solar storms, the band of that oval expands away from the poles, spreading the field further south so that the lights can be seen in most of the northern hemisphere, including New Jersey. The NOAA forecasts severe category G4 geomagnetic storms for today and tomorrow, resulting in a high likelihood of seeing the lights but also potential negative impacts for power grids, radio, and other technology that relies on electromagnetic fields.

A storm of similar strength took place in October of 2024, which was the last time the lights were seen across various U.S. states, including New Jersey. Per , geomagnetic storms are occurring more often and at higher severity due to the sun reaching its solar maximum at the peak of its 11-year cycle. This means that the sun is producing increased solar winds, sending more electrically charged particles towards Earth, which emit light when they interact with the upper atmosphere.

To get the best view of the lights, the NOAA says to watch within two hours of midnight, which is when the curtain-like lights “dance” in the sky. Darkest conditions are best, so rural areas away from light pollution will also have a better sight of the lights compared to suburbs and urban areas. The Jersey Shore had a particularly good view of last night’s lights, and will likely have the same conditions tonight.
